8 November Well, Peter and I went to Carnegie Hall last night to see the Eagan Piano Trio (which did not mean that it consisted of three pianos, as I feared). It was very cool and fun and everything, but it had been so long since I last attended a classical music concert that I had completely forgotten a very embarrassing side-effect. I fall asleep. And not because I am bored or anything, it's just that it's so lulling, even the dissonant stuff. I think it's because without words actively engaging that part of my brain, the music just rocks me to sleep. Fine in your own living room, not so great in Carnegie Hall.
Everyone has voicemail at work, but sometimes John or Dave or somebody asks me to take a message. I carefully write down the message, and then give it to them. I recently found out that "Take a message" does not mean take a message, it means make the caller THINK that your taking a message! It's all lies! I'm not at all good at this sort of thing.
I must say, and keep in mind that I work as a receptionist, so I may be prejudiced, but I think that the most annoying thing ever invented on the planet earth is the speaker phone. I can never hear anyone who's using one, and the beginnings and ends of their words are cut off and it's sort of like they're saying :"Yes, yes, I'll speak with you, but you're not important enough for me to actually waste the use of my arms and hands."
I was given a fax to send out and Dave had sort of scribbled the first page, and the date looked like 1990, not 1996. I can only imagine the surprise of the recipient: "This took SIX years to get here? And look! It arrived on the exact anniversary of the date it was sent!"
